2008-07-16 - THE CON GAME

comic-con.jpg

We're only days away now from the comics/sci-fi/pop-culture event of the year, Comic-Con International: San Diego. With tickets selling out earlier this year than ever before, and hotel reservations at such a premium that they quite literally booked up the entire town in a matter of hours, this year looks like it might be the biggest one yet, which is saying something.

While a few years ago I provided a guide to Con-Goers (entitled "CONVENTIONAL THINKING," which you can find here), things have exploded at the Con so drastically in recent years, I thought it seemed like time for an update.

First off, go brush up on my previous column. Go ahead, we'll wait for you.

All caught up? Good. First off, as big and intimidating as I described it back in '03, it's even more so now. Which leads us to our first order of business:

1. Relax.

You're supposed to be having a good time. Comic-Con is just too big anymore for anyone to see everything, so remember to just slow down, and really enjoy the things you are seeing. Which brings us to Point the Second.

2. Try to keep a little perspective.

Remember that what seems like the most important thing in the world to see today is old news within a month. And also, let's be honest -- almost everything of note will eventually wind up on the Internet. So if you don't get into, say, the WATCHMEN panel, don't worry about it. Anything they show in there you're gonna see on YouTube or Ain't It Cool by August. In fact, it might not even be worth waiting in that two-hour line to see, and that could be two hours you spend on something you might never see again, like an interview with a favorite writer or artist, or a captivating panel discussion. The movie stuff is transitory -- that clip you see from a trailer will eventually be on the DVD you buy 18 months from now, and the time you waste in line to see it is gone forever.

crowds.jpg

These folks waited four hours to see three minutes of SPIDER-MAN 3 footage, which was online hours later. Perhaps not the best use of Comic-Con time.

3. Be flexible.

It's impossible to really predict what's going to happen at the show from year to year in terms of crowds. If I were writing this last year, I'd be telling you, if at all possible, to avoid the show on Saturday, because of the insanely overcrowded floor in the Exhibit Hall. However, numerous retailers have told me that Saturday was their slowest day last year, because the folks who run Programming for the show had stacked everything really newsworthy on Saturday, and so consequently there were thousands of people upstairs and in the giant auditorium who never left their seats all day. So most definitely have yourself a plan, but don't be afraid to alter it.

4. Think ahead.

You know what happens every night in San Diego during Comic-Con week? Eleventy thousand people hit the Gaslamp Quarter at the same time and try to get a table at a restaurant. If there are a couple places you really want to eat at, do yourself a favor and make reservations. Nothing's better than enjoying a nice steak while you watch dozens of hungry Stormtroopers trudge by looking for dinner options.

5. Don't give in to the hype.

Those exclusive action figures you want? There will be plenty to go around. And even if by some chance you miss out on one, again, within a matter of months you'll see them on eBay for the same price they were going for at the show. (Except for ours, that is. We always sell out. Seriously.) Now, I'm not saying don't wait in line for the items you want most, but maybe skip the two-hour-long line at the Hasbro booth on Friday and try the 20-minute wait on Sunday instead.

6. For god's sake, get some air.

I've been as guilty of this as anyone in years past, but you really owe it to yourself to get out of the Convention Center for a while. San Diego's a beautiful town, and there's so much to see, so trade the zoo of sweaty humanity for an actual Zoo, or at least get out and sit by the pool for an hour or so.

7. Go and check out Artist's Alley.

Lots of folks skip this area every year, and they're missing out. Not only is there fantastic artwork available for sale at surprisingly reasonable prices (and what better way to spend your money at Comic-Con than on original artwork?), but it's just a great opportunity to meet some of the folks who draw some of your favorite comics you read all year long.

8. Play against the clock.

Don't even think about trying to get in when the place opens at 10. Give yourself a break and go in at 10:30, when you can stroll right in. Have your lunch at 2 p.m. This sounds like basic, dumbass advice, but you have no idea how much of a difference it can make when 100,000 people all decide to get lunch at noon.

9. The Red Line is your friend.

redline.jpg

If you're staying someplace that's a little farther than comfortable walking distance from the Con (and judging by how fast rooms went this year, that's most of you), check out how close you are to a Red Line trolley stop. Last year I discovered to my delight there was a station next door to my hotel, and my 12-block walk suddenly became a low-stress, $3 five-minute train ride. By Day 3 of the show, it was the best Comic-Con discovery ever.

10. Don't go home.

At least not right away. If you're not too pinched for cash and vacation days, I highly recommend staying an extra day after the show is over to decompress. It's much easier to enjoy Sunday night knowing you're not going to be fighting that traffic getting out of town, and a leisurely day by the pool or at the mall on Monday is the perfect antidote for the "Con fatigue/flu" that's bound to hit you after four days (or for some of us poor bastards, six) cooped up in the Convention Center.

For an insanely expansive guide to everything you need to know to survive and thrive in the Comic-Con experience, I highly recommend Tom Spurgeon's excellent manifesto on the subject over at his Web site, The Comics Reporter.

###

So what do I recommend seeing this year? Well, the full Programming Schedule has been posted over at www.comic-con.org, so let's take a stroll through the listings and look for a few places you might find me (and about 100,000 other geeks) next week:

THURSDAY

10:30-11:30 Freaks, Geeks, and Tiny Toons-- Warner Home Video brings the hit animated television series Tiny Toon Adventures and Freakazoid! to DVD on July 29. This panel features Bruce Timm (storyboard artist, character designer), John McCann (Douglas Douglas, Hero Boy story editor), Paul Rugg (Freakazoid writer), Sherri Stoner (writer, producer, story editor), Paul Dini (writer, story editor), Jean MacCurdy (executive producer), Rich Arons (producer, writer, director) and Andrea Romano (voice director). They're tiny, they're toony, they're all a little loony! Executive produced by Steven Spielberg, Tiny Toon Adventures is a Daytime Emmy Award animated series that spawned a whole new generation of madcap Looney Toons characters, including Buster Bunny, Babs Bunny, Plucky Duck, and Hamton J. Pig, among others. Freakazoid! aired for two seasons. Also executive produced by Spielberg, this Daytime Emmy Award–winning series chronicles the adventures of Freakazoid, a manic, insane superhero who battles a vast array of supervillains. Room 6A

I always loved Freakazoid, so this is a must-see.

11:30-12:30 Hasbro: GI Joe -- As Hasbro ramps up for the summer 2009 blockbuster movie release of GI Joe, Aaron Archer (Hasbro Design), Michael Ritchie (Hasbro Marketing), and Michelino Paolino (Hasbro Design) discuss this year’s product line, entertainment, and other initiatives. Panelists will include special guests that you won’t want to miss, plus Q&A! Room 7AB

Maybe this will be the year Hasbro brings back the Terrordrome...

2:00-3:00 The Middleman -- Creator and executive producer Javier Grillo-Marxuach (Lost) and The Middleman actors Matt Keeslar (Dune) and Natalie Morales (CSI: Miami) discuss the bizarre world of The Middleman. Based on the graphic novels by Javier Grillo-Marxuach, The Middleman follows the surreal life of twenty-something Wendy Watson as she gets recruited by a top secret agency to fight comic book-esque criminals under the guidance of her straight-laced boss, The Middleman. Room 5AB

This show has been a pleasant surprise, so I'll definitely check this out...

4:00-5:00 Star Trek Without a Blueprint: How Books and Comics Keep Expanding the Boundaries of the Star Trek Universe -- Andy Mangels (moderator and Star Trek author), Margaret Clark (executive editor, Pocket Books), Andy Schmidt (senior editor, IDW) and Star Trek authors Kevin Dilmore, Dave Mack, Scott Tipton, Wil Wheaton, and Dayton Ward discuss the future of Star Trek publishing. Room 32AB

Come see me stammer my way through the panel and make Pakled jokes that no one will get!

FRIDAY

11:30-12:30 Mattel and DC Comics: A Heroic Partnership -- You've been a fan of Mattel's popular DC toy lines, now find out the latest news, sneak peaks, and behind-the-scenes scoop on your favorite Mattel/DC action figures, including DC Universe Classics, Justice League Unlimited, The Dark Knight, and Infinite Heroes,—plus exciting new lines like Batman Brave and the Bold—as well as the world premiere of new action figures. Be on hand as representatives from Mattel, DC Comics, and Warner Bros. Entertainment offer an insightful Q&A. Brought to you by Mattycollector.com. Room 8

Maybe someone in here can explain why I can't find Mattel DC figures anywhere...

11:55-1:00 Warner Bros.: Watchmen -- A complex, multi-layered mystery adventure, Watchmen is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock"— which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union—is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up —- but no less determined —- masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion—a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers —- Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who watches the Watchmen? Guest appearances TBA. Hall H

The only movie panel worth going to this year. Hopefully I can get in.

1:45-2:45 Ghostbusters: The Video Game -- Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and panelists from Sierra Entertainment and Sony Pictures Consumer Products discuss the eagerly anticipated Ghostbusters: The Video Game, due out this October. The panel focuses on what it takes to bring fans the next chapter in the Ghostbusters universe, including working with the original cast members and Sony Pictures Consumer Products to create a completely true and faithful interactive ghostbusting experience. Room 6B

How often do you get to meet Ghostbusters? Never, that's how often.

5:30-6:30 Penny Arcade -- The creators of Penny Arcade are on hand for a one-hour open Q&A session about the game industry, their own foray into making games, PAX, webcomics, Child’s Play, and more! (Please do not bring them food. They do not know any better and will, in fact, eat it.) Room 5AB

One of the few conflicts of the show for me, and it's a triple-header. Do I go listen to Gabe and Tycho, or...

5:30-6:15 [adult swim]’s The Venture Brothers -- Jackson Publick (creator and voices of Hank Venture, The Monarch, Henchman 24, Pete White and Sgt. Hatred) and Mike Sinterniklaas (voice of Dean Venture) speak about [adult swim]’s original series, The Venture Brothers. Now in its third season, the show picked up after the explosive wedding of The Monarch and Dr. Girlfriend from the season two cliffhanger. Room 6B

...or go pay tribute to the Venture Brothers, currently my favorite show on television, or...

5:30-6:30 24 -- It's been off the air since May, 2007 but Comic-Con fans will get the first look at the exciting prequel shot in South Africa and the upcoming 7th season of the Emmy winning Fox series, as well as chat with the executive producers and stars Kiefer Sutherland and Carlos Bernard. Room 6CDEF

...bow down before Jack Bauer, the Baddest Man Alive? Decisions. Decisions...

SATURDAY

10:00-10:45 Futurama Secrets Revealed! -- Join Futurama creator Matt Groening and executive producer David X. Cohen in a mind-blowing, jaw-dropping, fact-checking panel extravaganza! Appearing with Matt and David are series regulars Billy West (Fry, Professor Farnsworth, Dr. Zoidberg, Zapp Brannigan), Katey Sagal (Leela), John DiMaggio (Bender), and Maurice LaMarche (Kif, Morbo). And if that's not enough, enjoy color commentary from Eric Kaplan (co-executive producer, writer) and lots of insider straight dope from producer Claudia Katz and director Peter Avanzino of Rough Draft Animation. Plus, don't miss out on your chance to see the sneak peek of "Bender's Game," the all-new feature-length Futurama adventure, crash-landing on store shelves this November! Ballroom 20

Hopefully, the fact that this is up first for the day means I'll actually be able to get in this year...

10:15-11:15 Spotlight on Ralph Bakshi -- On par with such auteurs as Walt Disney, Tex Avery, Chuck Jones, and art spiegelman, Comic-Con special guest Ralph Bakshi redefined animation and became a hero to countless generations of fans and filmmakers. His name is synonymous with the great tradition of American cartooning. Bakshi is responsible for such memorable films and television shows such as Fritz the Cat (the first X-rated animated feature film), The New Adventures of Mighty Mouse, Spider-Man, Heavy Traffic, Wizards, Cool World, and The Lord of the Rings, which celebrates its 30th anniversary this year. Join Ralph Bakshi for a rare, in-person appearance as he discusses his legendary career. Moderated by Jon M. Gibson and Chris McDonnell, co-authors of Unfiltered: The Complete Ralph Bakshi, the only book chronicling the career of one of the pioneers of animation. Room 6B

A rare Ralph Bakshi appearance, this could be very interesting.

11:00-12:00 IDW Publishing: Ideas and Dreams 2008 -- IDW publisher Chris Ryall presides over a superstar panel including writer Joe Hill; artists Gabriel Rodriguez (Locke & Key), Ben Templesmith (Welcome to Hoxford), and Darwyn Cooke (announcing a surprise new project and offering up an exclusive signature card available only at this panel); writers Brian Lynch (Angel: After the Fall), Steve Niles (Epilogue), Rick Remender (Legion of the Supernatural), and David Lapham; actors Shawnee Smith and Ken Foree; IDW special projects editor Scott Dunbier, and others. And they all guarantee at least a few surprise announcements of things to come! Room 3

Come watch our own Chris Ryall try to rein in a panel dais that's more overpopulated than the Legion of Doom!

1:00-2:00 Dollhouse -- When news broke that Joss Whedon was returning to television with a vehicle for “Buffy” alum Eliza Dushku, legions of fans around the world rejoiced. Although most will have to wait until January to learn more about the exciting new project, Comic-Con fans will hear it straight from Joss and Eliza in person! Ballroom 20

Trust me. Don't even bother trying to get in.

4:00-5:00 Science of Superheroes -- James Kakalios (consulting physicist from Watchmen) moderates this presentation and Q&A on what makes superheroes work, science-wise. Room 2

Dr. K's comic-physics lectures are extremely entertaining. Highly recommended.

8:30-10:00 Marvel: Wolverine and The X-Men Animated Screening -- When an explosive event shatters the lives of the X-Men and takes away their mentor, the beaten heroes walk away from it all. But then they're given a rare glimpse into the future, and see a world in utter ruin, ruled by mutant-hunting Sentinels. So now the most legendary of all X-Men takes the lead—Wolverine! Reuniting these broken heroes, Wolverine embarks on the ultimate mission—to prevent the world's destruction. To rescue us from ourselves. To save the future. Meet Boyd Kirkland (lead director), Craig Kyle (supervising producer), Greg Johnson (head writer), and others involved with this new animated series and watch the first three episodes of this epic new X-Men series before its Nicktoons 2009 premiere. Room 6CDEF

This looks very promising based on what I've seen so far, and it's a big room on Saturday night, so you might actually get in.

SUNDAY

10:00-11:00 Jack Kirby Tribute -- As we do every year, friend and family of the great Jack Kirby to remember the man some call The King. Participating this year are animation producers Joe Ruby and Ken Spears, Marvel writer-artist Larry Lieber, and comic book legend Jerry Robinson. And it's all hosted by--who else?--Mark Evanier, author of the recent book, Kirby: King of Comics. Room 7AB

Every year I try and go to this, and every year it's worth it.

11:00-12:00 Dave Stevens Tribute -- The industry was shocked and saddened at the loss this year of one of our great creative talents. Emcee Mark Evanier chairs an hour of remembrance by Dave's fans and friends as they talk about the creator of The Rocketeer...a great artist who left us much too early. Room 7AB

I hate that this panel is necessary, but I think it'll be a nice way to remember Dave.

2:30-4:00 Pro/Fan Trivia Match -- The Purple Pros -- Len Wein (Wolverine creator), Mark Waid (BOOM! Comics editor-in-chief), Kurt Busiek (Astro City), and Robert N. Skir (animated X-Men) -- again take on the Black Ink Irregulars (Tom Galloway, Terence Chua, David Oakes, and John Sardegna), this time seeking to regain their youth by answering questions about young comics characters, those college age or below, including the convention theme Legion of Super-Heroes. This match is dedicated to longtime scorekeeper John Simpson, who passed away last October. Room 4

I do enjoy watching Mark Waid crush the competition every year...

2:45-4:15 Fraggle Rock -- Help celebrate the 25th Anniversary of Fraggle Rock and learn more about this fall's newest DVD release! Join Red -- making a personal appearance -- as she sneak peeks the DVD special features and some other DVD surprises! Room 6B

How often do you get to meet Fraggles? Never, that's how often.

4:00-5:00 Buffy the Musical -- Let's end this show with a bang! The powers that be behind Whedonopolis.com host a screening of the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode "Once More With Feeling" as Comic Con 2008's big closing event! Many say this is the finest, funniest, most ingenious episode ever to come out of the Buffy-verse. But remember, the best part of the show is up to you! These eps were made for talkin' -- back, that is -- and singing and shouting and dancing in the aisles -- with or without your dry cleaning! Audience participation: it isn't just for Rocky Horror and mob riots anymore. For more details on the screening visit www.whedonopolis.com, then show up for music, singing, and dancing crazy! Ballroom 20

I'll be honest, this scares me a little.

###
